Facebook buys group-messaging startup Beluga

Facebook wants to become the key player for online communication and displace services like Skype, ICQ and email. In this context, Facebook just aquired Beluga, an eight-month old group text service which allows users to create groups in real-time and send messages to all the members of the group at once.

The acquisition of Beluga gives Facebook both the Beluga service and, more significantly, the engineering team behind it. Beluga has a small but skilled staff of three, all of whom are former Google employees. Based in Palo Alto, California, the company is located just a few miles away from Facebook’s new headquarters in Menlo Park.

Sooner or later, theses services will be integrated to Facebook’s unified inbox which serves as an all-in-one repository for any kind of Facebook related communication such as text mesages, SMS, email or chat conversations. The benefits and possibilities of the group text service could also be used for Facebook applications like Places, Groups and Pages.
