Facebook moves to Menlo Park

The Facebook headquarters will move from Palo Alto to the former Sun Microsystems campus in Menlo Park which is situated ten kilometers away from the old offices.

Facebook has signed a 15-year lease contract with an option to buy the campus after five years of lease. The eleven buildings of the complex can accommodate 3600 employes. Facebook is going to send its first 500 employees to Menlo Park as early as June 2011. Other employees will follow in waves over a period of 12 months. Facebook will keep the offices in Palo Alto until the end of 2013 when the lease agreements expire.

We were attracted to the campus that Sun had built, to the location in Menlo Park that had central accessibility from around the Bay Area (Editor: where most of Facebook’s 2000 employees work), to the local amenities, and extremely attracted to all the support that we got from local officials,” said chief financial officer David Ebersman

The reason for the move comes as Facebook plans to continually hire new staff in order to push on the growth of the world’s largest social network.
